ChatGPT SEO Expert Who Gets Your Brand Cited in ChatGPT Search
ChatGPT Search answers buying questions for hundreds of millions of weekly users, and every answer cites only a handful of sources. I am Anshul Rana, a ChatGPT SEO specialist with 8+ years in search and 1,000+ websites optimized. I get brands into those citation slots, and I do it through the channel most SEOs ignore completely: Bing.
Why ChatGPT Search Matters Now
ChatGPT has built in web search, powered by Bing, serving a user base of 200M+ weekly active users. When those users ask which tool to buy, which provider to hire or which product fits their situation, ChatGPT answers in full sentences and cites its sources with links. The businesses in those citations get the click, the trust and the sale. Everyone else is simply absent from the conversation.
ChatGPT citations also behave differently from Google results. In Google you compete for ten blue links, and the user still has to choose between them. In ChatGPT there are typically only three to five cited sources per answer, and the user arrives at your site having already been told your content is the answer. Getting into those slots is harder, but the traffic that comes out of them converts at a completely different level, because the AI has done the persuading before the click happens.
That scarcity is the opportunity. Fewer slots means the sites that do the work own a disproportionate share of the demand, and right now most of your competitors have not started. If you want the wider context on how answer engines are reshaping search, my guide on SEO vs AEO vs GEO covers the theory, and the ChatGPT SEO resource guide collects everything I have published on this engine. This page is about hiring someone to do the work for you.
The Bing Connection Most SEOs Miss
Here is the fact that shapes my entire approach: ChatGPT Search is essentially Bing with a conversational interface. When ChatGPT reaches for web results, it retrieves them primarily through Bing's index. If Bing has not crawled your page, ChatGPT cannot cite it. If Bing misreads your entities, ChatGPT inherits the confusion. Bing optimization stopped being optional the day ChatGPT Search launched. It became a ChatGPT visibility strategy.
And almost nobody acts on this. The industry spent two decades treating Bing as an afterthought, and most agencies still do. Their loss is measurable: while they fight over Google positions, the pipeline that feeds ChatGPT citations is comparatively empty. I verify every client in Bing Webmaster Tools, push new and updated pages through IndexNow so Bing sees changes in hours rather than weeks, and structure schema the way Bing parses it, because all three of those feed directly into which sources ChatGPT retrieves and cites. I understood this connection early, built it into my process, and it is the single biggest difference between what I deliver and what a generic AI SEO service delivers.
ChatGPT Search runs on Bing's index. Optimize for Bing and you are optimizing for ChatGPT, while most of your competitors are not optimizing for either.
What I Do: My ChatGPT SEO Process
Every engagement covers the five layers that decide whether ChatGPT cites you. Each layer maps to a deliverable you can inspect.
Bing Index Optimization
Your site verified in Bing Webmaster Tools, every important page submitted through IndexNow, crawl errors cleared, and index coverage confirmed page by page. This is the retrieval pipeline that ChatGPT Search actually pulls from, and for most sites it has never been touched.
Deliverable. Bing Webmaster Tools verified and configured, IndexNow submission live for new and updated content, and an index coverage report for every money page.
Entity Clarity Through Schema
ChatGPT decides what to cite partly by how confidently it can identify who you are. I deploy a connected Person and Organization @graph with stable @id references and sameAs links to your authoritative profiles, following the method in my walkthrough on building a JSON-LD schema graph for AI search and the entity playbook in entity optimization for GEO.
Deliverable. A validated JSON-LD @graph on every money page, entity facts made consistent across your site and profiles, and ambiguity removed from how engines read your brand.
Content Formatting for ChatGPT Extraction
ChatGPT quotes passages that answer questions directly. I restructure your pages around direct answer paragraphs placed early, comparison tables it can lift whole, and FAQ pairs that mirror how buyers actually phrase questions, using the checklist from my answer engine readiness audit.
Deliverable. Money pages rewritten for extraction, with a priority order based on which of your target queries ChatGPT already answers and who it currently cites.
GPTBot Crawl Access
GPTBot is OpenAI's crawler, and it is blocked more often than site owners realize, sometimes in robots.txt, more often by a CDN or firewall rule nobody remembers setting. I audit access at the server level and fix what is silently failing.
Deliverable. A crawl access report confirming GPTBot and BingBot can fetch every page that should be citable, with robots.txt corrected and infrastructure blocks whitelisted.
Citation Tracking
You cannot manage what you do not measure. I baseline a fixed set of target queries in ChatGPT, log which sources it cites, and rerun the set monthly. In parallel I configure GA4 to isolate referral traffic from chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com, using the same setup I documented in how to track AI traffic in GA4.
Deliverable. A monthly citation share report against your baseline, a GA4 channel group capturing ChatGPT referrals, and a branded search baseline in Search Console to catch the delayed effect.
Results From Client Work
These are anonymized outcomes from recent engagements. Client names are confidential, but every number comes from tracked data I can walk you through on a call.
A note on honesty, because this market attracts inflated claims: the first month of ChatGPT SEO looks like plumbing. Bing verification, crawler access and schema do not make headlines. But they are why month three looks like citations, and why month six looks like a moat your competitors have to pay full price to cross.
How an Engagement Works
Week 1: ChatGPT citation audit
I query ChatGPT with your brand and your top keywords, log exactly what gets cited and who currently owns your answers, and identify the gaps worth attacking first. You can preview a slice of this with the free AI SEO audit.
Week 2: Technical foundation
GPTBot access verified and fixed, Bing Webmaster Tools configured, pages submitted through IndexNow, and the JSON-LD @graph deployed across your money pages.
Weeks 3 to 4: Content restructuring
Your highest value pages rewritten for answer ready formatting: direct answer openings, extraction friendly tables, and FAQ pairs matched to real buyer phrasing.
Weeks 5 to 8: Distribution and entity mentions
Brand mentions earned on the third party pages ChatGPT reads and trusts in your niche, because engines cite brands the wider web already talks about consistently.
Week 8 and beyond: Tracking and reporting
Monthly citation set reruns against your baseline, GA4 referral reporting for chatgpt.com and chat.openai.com, branded search lift tracked in Search Console, and priorities reset by what the data shows.
Who This Is For
SaaS Companies
Your buyers ask ChatGPT to shortlist tools before they ever open a review site. If ChatGPT describes your category without naming you, that pipeline goes to whoever did the work. I get you into the comparison set with the description you would have written yourself.
Ecommerce Brands
ChatGPT recommends products and category pages when it can parse what you sell and trust what it parsed. Product schema, clean category structures and Bing index coverage turn your catalog into something ChatGPT can confidently point buyers at.
Personal Brands and Consultants
When someone asks ChatGPT who to hire in your specialty, it names people whose expertise it can verify across the web. Entity work and consistent profiles decide whether that name is yours. This page is the same playbook I run on my own site.
Agencies
Your clients are asking what you are doing about AI visibility. I deliver white label ChatGPT SEO under your brand, with reporting your account managers can present, so you can sell the capability without building it from scratch.
Local Businesses
ChatGPT answers near me and best in city questions with specific business names. Clean local entities, consistent citations and Bing Places coverage get you named, and most local competitors will never touch any of it.
ChatGPT SEO vs Traditional Google SEO
| Area | ChatGPT SEO | Traditional Google SEO |
|---|---|---|
| The prize | One of 3 to 5 citation slots in a synthesized answer | A position among 10 blue links the user still chooses from |
| The index | Bing's index feeds retrieval, so Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow matter directly | Google's index, Bing typically ignored entirely |
| The crawler | GPTBot and BingBot both need verified access | Googlebot only |
| Content shape | Direct answer paragraphs, liftable tables, FAQ pairs built for extraction | Keyword targeted pages built for ranking and clicks |
| Traffic quality | User arrives pre convinced, told by the AI that you are the answer | User arrives comparing, still deciding between ten options |
| What stays the same | Authoritative content, clean technical foundations, real expertise and consistent entity signals win in both. Good SEO is the floor for both games. | |
If you are also targeting Claude, the sister discipline works the same way with different plumbing. See my Claude SEO expert page for how the two engines differ and why I track them separately.
