Claude Sonnet 5: What It Is and How It Affects AI Search Visibility
Claude Sonnet 5 is the default model on claude.ai, released on June 30, 2026. Anthropic documents it as the default for Free and Pro plans, which makes it the single model most Claude answers come from, and therefore the most important Claude model for anyone doing AI SEO.
Claude Sonnet 5 Key Facts
What Claude Sonnet 5 Is Used For
Sonnet 5 is the model most people mean when they say "Claude answered". Anthropic's launch announcement states it is "the default model for Free and Pro plans, and is available to Max, Team, and Enterprise users", and the model documentation positions it as the best combination of speed and intelligence in the lineup.
For SEO work, defaults are destiny. The overwhelming majority of consumer queries run on whatever model ships as the default, so when you test how Claude describes your brand or whether it cites your pages, Sonnet 5 is the model you are testing against.
Retrieval and Citation Behaviour
Sonnet 5 answers search-shaped questions through Claude's standard pipeline: query formulation, retrieval from Anthropic's independent index, live page fetches by Claude-User, and composed answers with direct citations, per Anthropic's web search documentation. Web search is available globally on all Claude plans.
Because Sonnet 5 handles the volume, its retrieval habits define your practical Claude visibility: whether your pages are in the index Claude-SearchBot builds, whether Claude-User can fetch them at answer time, and whether your content offers a quotable answer near the top of the page. Rank on Google is not part of that pipeline.
How to Be Visible When Claude Sonnet 5 Handles the Query
These are the actions justified by my Claude SEO guide, in priority order for the model that answers most Claude queries.
- Allow all three Claude crawlers. Verify robots.txt and your CDN or firewall permit ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User; silent bot-protection blocking is the most common Claude visibility killer I find in audits. The full access walkthrough is in my Claude SEO guide.
- Answer first under every heading. Open key sections with a direct 40 to 60 word answer. Claude reads rendered text and quotes the clearest source it finds, so extractable sentences are the ranking factor.
- Baseline your visibility against Sonnet 5 specifically. Run a fixed set of customer questions on a Free or Pro account monthly and record citations; that is your primary Claude KPI. The measurement setup is in my Claude SEO guide.
- Harden your entity facts. One name, one description, one consistent set of facts across your site, profiles and directories, backed by a connected JSON-LD schema graph.
- Publish and maintain llms.txt. A concise canonical-facts file at your site root gives any AI system that reads it your facts in one place; it is cheap insurance for every engine, Claude included.
- Go deeper or hire it out. Claude SEO: How AI Is Changing SEO explains how Claude evaluates content, and the Claude SEO expert service does the implementation for you.
