Claude Models Explained: Which One Powers AI Search and What It Means for SEO

Claude is the AI assistant built by Anthropic, and as of September 2026 its current lineup is four models: Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Haiku 4.5. The one that matters most for search visibility is Claude Sonnet 5, because Anthropic documents it as the default model for Free and Pro plans on claude.ai. This page compares the full lineup, tracks the release timeline, and explains what model choice changes about retrieval, citations and SEO.

Claude models explained for AI search and SEO, by Anshul Rana

The Current Claude Model Lineup

Four models are current, and they split cleanly by job. Every spec below comes from Anthropic's model documentation; all current models read text and images and output text, and none documents an audio modality. Claude Mythos 5.1 also exists as an invitation-only sibling of Fable 5.1 with reduced safeguards, restricted to Anthropic's Project Glasswing trusted-access programs, so it is not part of the consumer picture.

Release Timeline

Most recent first. Dates are from Anthropic's model documentation and announcements, linked in the sources below.

September 1, 2026

Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 released

Anthropic's new frontier pair: the same model with different safeguard levels, Fable generally available and Mythos invitation only. 1M context, June 2026 knowledge cutoff.

July 24, 2026

Claude Opus 5 released

Became Anthropic's recommended starting point for most workloads and the default model on Claude Max, available across Claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Cowork.

June 30, 2026

Claude Sonnet 5 released

Became the default model for Free and Pro plans on claude.ai, replacing the Sonnet 4.x line as the model most consumer answers come from.

June 9, 2026

Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 released

The first Fable and Mythos generation, now legacy but still active, with retirement committed no sooner than June 9, 2027.

October 15, 2025

Claude Haiku 4.5 released

The current speed tier. The oldest model in the active lineup, with the nearest retirement window: no sooner than October 15, 2026.

2026 retirements

The Claude 3 and 4 era wound down

Opus 4.1 retired August 5, 2026; Opus 4 and Sonnet 4 retired June 15, 2026; Haiku 3, Haiku 3.5, Sonnet 3.7 and Opus 3 retired earlier in 2026, per Anthropic's deprecations page.

How Model Choice Affects Retrieval, Citation and Freshness

The short answer: every current Claude model shares one retrieval pipeline, so model choice changes judgment and volume, not plumbing. All of them can search the web through Anthropic's independent index, fetch pages live and cite sources, and none of them retrieves from Google's rankings.

Three things do change with the model. First, judgment: stronger models verify claims harder, cross-reference more sources inside bigger context windows, and drop unquotable marketing copy faster. Second, audience: Sonnet 5 answers the Free and Pro volume, Opus 5 answers the professional Max tier, and Haiku 4.5 sits inside API products, so the same query hits different models depending on who asks. Third, freshness: each model carries its own knowledge cutoff, from February 2025 on Haiku 4.5 to June 2026 on Fable 5.1, which is why live retrieval, not training data, is the surface you can actually optimize on a schedule.

What This Means for SEO

One strategy covers the whole lineup. Allow ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, write answer-first pages with hardened entity facts, and keep your claims consistent across the web; the complete playbook is my Claude SEO guide, and the commercial version of this work is the Claude SEO expert service alongside the broader AI SEO expert program.

Test against the default. Your monthly citation baseline should run against Sonnet 5, because that is what most users see; check professional queries against Opus 5 if your buyers are Max-tier professionals. This is the same entity-and-citation discipline behind my Arshay Cooper technical SEO, AEO and GEO case study and my chiropractic clinic AI visibility case study, both of which moved AI visibility without a single trick specific to any one model.

Every Claude Model, Explained

Each current model gets its own page: what it is, its key facts with sources, its retrieval behavior, and the checklist for staying visible when it handles the query.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which model powers Claude right now?
Claude Sonnet 5 is the default model for Free and Pro plans on claude.ai, per Anthropic. Claude Opus 5 is the default on Max plans, and Claude Fable 5.1 is the frontier tier. Most consumer Claude answers come from Sonnet 5.
How many Claude models are currently active?
Four consumer-relevant models: Fable 5.1, Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5, plus the invitation-only Mythos 5.1 and several legacy 4.x and 5.0 models Anthropic keeps active with committed retirement dates.
Do different Claude models cite different websites?
The retrieval pipeline is shared, but judgment differs. Stronger models verify claims harder and favor clearly attributed, verifiable pages, so weak content that survived older models tends to lose citations as defaults upgrade.
What is Claude Mythos and can I optimize for it?
Mythos is the reduced-safeguard sibling of Fable, restricted to Anthropic's invitation-only Project Glasswing programs for vetted cyberdefense and life-science work. It is not a consumer search surface, so it is not an SEO target.
Does Claude use Google's index for web search?
No. Anthropic runs its own crawlers and an independent search index. That is why Claude visibility does not follow Google rankings, and why access for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User is the first thing to audit.
How fresh is Claude's knowledge about my site?
Two paths: training data, frozen at each model's cutoff, and live web search, which reflects your pages as crawled now. Optimize for retrieval first; it responds within weeks, while training-data representation compounds slowly across model generations.
