Gemini Models Explained: Which One Powers AI Search and What It Means for SEO

Gemini is Google's AI model family, and it powers the AI surfaces inside Google Search. As of September 2026 the model that matters most is Gemini 3.5 Flash, which Google made the default in AI Mode globally at I/O 2026; Gemini 3.8 Flash is the newest Flash, available to Pro and Ultra subscribers, and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is rolling out in Google Search. This page compares the search-relevant lineup and explains what it means for SEO.

The table focuses on the five models tied to Search and SEO; the wider catalog also includes Gemini 3.6 Flash, the 3.1 Pro preview, Gemini 3 Flash and the 2.5 Flash line, plus restricted Cyber variants for vetted defenders.

How Model Choice Affects Retrieval, Citation and Freshness

The short answer: every current Gemini model grounds in the same place, Google Search, so model choice shifts which surface and audience you are answering for, not where retrieval happens. Grounding retrieves from Google's index and links sources in the answer, which keeps classic rankings the supply line for every Gemini surface.

What changes by model is scale and depth. Flash-Lite class models power the biggest surfaces and read the least per answer, so extraction decides everything. The AI Mode default reads more and synthesizes real answers with a handful of links. Subscriber-tier Flash models verify hardest. Freshness splits the same way it does everywhere: training cutoffs range from January 2025 on 2.5 Pro to mid-2026 on the newest Flash line, so live grounding, not model memory, is the surface your updates reach first.

What This Means for SEO

The Gemini playbook is Google-native: hold your rankings, do the Knowledge Graph and schema entity work, keep Googlebot access clean, and structure pages answer-first so grounded models can lift you into the response. The complete method is my Gemini SEO guide, the commercial version is the Gemini SEO expert service, and multi-engine work runs under the AI SEO expert program.

Then measure per surface: AI Mode baselining against 3.5 Flash, AI Overviews impressions in Search Console's generative AI reports, and subscriber-tier spot checks on 3.8 Flash. The entity-first discipline behind my Arshay Cooper technical SEO, AEO and GEO case study and the visibility gains in my chiropractic clinic AI visibility case study are the same work this page describes, pointed at Google's surfaces.

Every Gemini Model, Explained

Each search-relevant model gets its own page: what it is, its key facts with sources, its retrieval behavior, and the checklist for staying visible when it handles the query.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Gemini model powers AI Mode in Google Search?
Gemini 3.5 Flash, which Google made the default model in AI Mode globally at I/O on May 19, 2026. Gemini 3.8 Flash is additionally available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers inside AI Mode.
Which model powers AI Overviews?
Google's last explicit statement made Gemini 3 the AI Overviews default in January 2026, and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite has been rolling out in Google Search since July 2026. Google has not published a newer exact default.
How many Gemini models are current?
Google's documentation lists roughly a dozen current text models across the 3.x and 2.5 lines, sharing a 1M input window and Grounding with Google Search. This hub focuses on the five tied most directly to Search and SEO.
Do Gemini models use my Google rankings?
Yes, through grounding. Grounding with Google Search retrieves from Google's index, so pages that rank feed every Gemini surface. Selection inside the answer then favors extractable, well-attributed, consistent content.
What is Google-Extended and should I allow it?
Google-Extended is the robots.txt token controlling whether your content trains Google's AI models; blocking it does not remove you from Search or AI surfaces that ground in the index. Most brands seeking AI visibility leave it allowed.
Is Gemini 2.5 Pro going away?
Not on any announced date. The 2.0 line shut down June 1, 2026, but Google documents the 2.5 line as stable with no announced shutdown, which is why products built on 2.5 Pro keep running.
