Gemini 3.5 Flash: What It Is and How It Affects AI Search Visibility

Gemini 3.5 Flash is the model behind AI Mode in Google Search. Google made it the new default model in AI Mode globally at I/O on May 19, 2026, which makes 3.5 Flash the single most important Gemini model for search visibility: when a user asks AI Mode a question, this is usually the model answering.

What Gemini 3.5 Flash Is Used For

3.5 Flash carries Google's AI search volume. Google's I/O 2026 announcement named it "the new default model in AI Mode globally", and since August 2026 AI Mode experiences have expanded further into the main results page as AI Overviews dynamically expand for some queries.

The docs now describe 3.5 Flash as a legacy model for high-throughput workloads on the API side, but defaults define exposure: until Google announces a new AI Mode default, this is the model your AI Mode visibility lives or dies on.

Retrieval and Citation Behaviour

AI Mode answers are grounded in Google Search: the model retrieves from Google's index and links sources inside the answer. The model page documents Grounding with Google Search support, and Google's Search announcements describe link carousels and Preferred Sources surfacing inside AI Mode.

That means classic rank still feeds AI Mode, but selection inside the answer is model judgment: direct answers, clear entities, consistent facts and visible authorship decide who gets linked from the composed response. Being retrieved is necessary; being quotable is what converts it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gemini 3.5 Flash the default model in AI Mode?
Yes. Google announced at I/O on May 19, 2026 that Gemini 3.5 Flash became the new default model in AI Mode globally. Newer Flash models are available to Pro and Ultra subscribers, but the global default remains 3.5 Flash.
Does Gemini 3.5 Flash power AI Overviews too?
Google's last explicit AI Overviews default statement named Gemini 3 in January 2026, with Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite rolling out in Google Search from July 2026. Google has not published a newer exact AI Overviews default, so treat that surface as adjacent but not identical.
How do I get cited in AI Mode answers?
Hold rankings so grounding retrieves you, then win selection: a direct answer high on the page, hardened entity facts, consistent claims across the web and visible authorship. AI Mode links a handful of sources per answer, so extractability is the differentiator.
What is Gemini 3.5 Flash's context window?
1,048,576 input tokens and 65,536 output tokens, the shared spec across current Gemini text models per Google's documentation, with text, image, video, audio and PDF input.
