Claude Haiku 5.5: What It Is and How It Affects AI Search Visibility

Claude Haiku 5.5 is Anthropic's "cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model", released on October 7, 2026. It brings the Haiku tier to a 1 million token context window for the first time, prices input from $0.10 per million tokens, and costs around 75 percent less to run than Haiku 4.5, which makes it the model behind the high-volume classification, routing and extraction products your content flows through.

What Claude Haiku 5.5 Is Used For

Haiku is the model you rarely see and constantly meet. Anthropic builds it "for high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks such as classification, extraction, and routing" and for subagent work, per the model documentation. The announcement prices it at $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens, 90 percent below Haiku 4.5 at that size, and names Asana, HubSpot, AlphaSense, Box, Rogo and Cognition among early adopters. Box reported roughly half the latency of Haiku 4.5 with higher accuracy.

The 1 million token context window is the change that matters for SEO. Haiku 4.5 topped out at 200K tokens, which capped how much of a retrieved page set a cheap model could read; Haiku 5.5 reads five times more at a fraction of the price. Expect more third-party products to run full-page retrieval on the speed tier rather than summarising snippets, which rewards pages whose answer is extractable from the rendered text, not just the opening paragraph.

Retrieval and Citation Behaviour

With web search enabled, Claude Haiku 5.5 retrieves from Anthropic's independent search index and cites the pages it uses; citations are always on for API web search per the web search documentation. Claude does not retrieve from Google's index, so Google rankings are not the gate; access for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User is.

Every current Claude model shares that pipeline, so model choice changes judgment and volume rather than plumbing. In my client testing, stronger Claude models cite fewer, better sources per answer and favour pages where the answer sits high on the page and the author is identifiable. The window for being one of the three to five cited sources is narrower than a search results page ever was.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Claude Haiku 5.5 used for?
Anthropic positions Haiku 5.5 for high-volume, latency-sensitive work: classification, routing, extraction and subagent tasks. It is the model most likely to sit inside third-party products built on the Claude API, which is where a great deal of AI reading of your content happens.
How is Claude Haiku 5.5 different from Haiku 4.5?
Per Anthropic, the context window grew from 200K to 1M tokens, the knowledge cutoff moved from February 2025 to June 2026, and prices fell to $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. It also uses the newer tokenizer introduced with Claude Opus 4.7, so the same text counts as about 30 percent more tokens. Haiku 4.5 is now a legacy model.
Does Claude Haiku 5.5 search the web?
On the API, the web search tool is available to current Claude models, with citations always enabled. Whether a given product uses it depends on the developer; Haiku is often deployed for extraction and routing rather than open-ended search.
How long will Claude Haiku 5.5 be available?
Anthropic commits to keeping Haiku 5.5 available until at least October 7, 2027, one year after release, per its model deprecations page.
