Claude Sonnet 5.5: What It Is and How It Affects AI Search Visibility

Claude Sonnet 5.5 is Anthropic's "best combination of speed and intelligence", released on September 28, 2026 as a clear upgrade over Sonnet 5. It generates output more than 30 percent faster at the same $2 and $10 per million token prices, reads text and images across a 1 million token context window, and follows Sonnet 5 as the everyday Claude tier, which makes it the model to baseline your Claude visibility against.

What Claude Sonnet 5.5 Is Used For

Sonnet is the tier most Claude answers come from, and Sonnet 5.5 is its newest generation. Anthropic's announcement calls it the fastest Sonnet to date, with output generation more than 30 percent faster than Sonnet 5, the same per-token prices, cache reads cut in half, and up to 30 percent lower cost per task because it uses far fewer tokens. Anthropic has not published which claude.ai plan uses it by default; Sonnet 5 was documented as the Free and Pro default, so I treat Sonnet 5.5 as the likely successor in that role until Anthropic says otherwise.

One detail in the announcement matters directly for SEO. CodeRabbit reported that Sonnet 5.5 "no longer reaches for web search as often" as Sonnet 5 did. A model that searches less often answers more questions from training data, which means fewer live citations per answer and a higher bar for the queries where it does search. Your retrieval surface shrinks to the questions the model is not confident about, which are exactly the specific, current, verifiable ones.

Retrieval and Citation Behaviour

With web search enabled, Claude Sonnet 5.5 retrieves from Anthropic's independent search index and cites the pages it uses; citations are always on for API web search per the web search documentation. Claude does not retrieve from Google's index, so Google rankings are not the gate; access for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User is.

Every current Claude model shares that pipeline, so model choice changes judgment and volume rather than plumbing. In my client testing, stronger Claude models cite fewer, better sources per answer and favour pages where the answer sits high on the page and the author is identifiable. The window for being one of the three to five cited sources is narrower than a search results page ever was.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Claude Sonnet 5.5 used for?
Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 as the best combination of speed and intelligence, built for everyday coding, agent and enterprise workloads: code generation, data analysis, content creation, visual understanding and agentic tool use. It is available on the Claude API and all major cloud platforms.
Is Claude Sonnet 5.5 the default model on claude.ai?
Anthropic has not published per-plan defaults for the 5.5 generation. Sonnet 5 was documented as the default for Free and Pro plans, and Sonnet 5.5 is its direct successor, so it is the sensible model to baseline consumer Claude visibility against. The model selector on claude.ai shows the model in use for any account.
Does Claude Sonnet 5.5 search the web less than Sonnet 5?
One customer quoted in Anthropic's announcement, CodeRabbit, reported that Sonnet 5.5 reaches for web search less often and uses fewer output tokens. When it does search, it uses the same Anthropic search index and citation behaviour as every current Claude model.
How long will Claude Sonnet 5.5 be available?
Anthropic commits to keeping Sonnet 5.5 available until at least September 28, 2027, one year after release, per its model deprecations page. Sonnet 5 remains available as a legacy model until at least June 30, 2027.
