What Claude Opus 5.5 Is Used For

Opus 5.5 replaced Opus 5 at the top of the everyday Claude lineup. Anthropic positions it "for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work" and tells developers to "start with Claude Opus 5.5 for most workloads" in the models overview, reserving Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning where Opus at higher effort still falls short. The launch announcement reports 66.4 percent on Terminal-Bench 4.0 against 55.8 for Fable 5.1 and 52.3 for Opus 5, roughly 40 percent lower cost than Opus 5 on typical workloads, and a fast mode at up to 2.5 times the speed for $8 input and $40 output per million tokens.

Anthropic's announcement does not name a claude.ai plan that uses Opus 5.5 by default, so I treat it as the professional tier: the model behind API products, Claude Code sessions and the Max-tier picker, and the model Perplexity exposes to its Max subscribers. When those users ask Claude to shortlist vendors or compare tools, Opus 5.5 is increasingly the model composing the answer.

Retrieval and Citation Behaviour

With web search enabled, Claude Opus 5.5 retrieves from Anthropic's independent search index and cites the pages it uses; citations are always on for API web search per the web search documentation. Claude does not retrieve from Google's index, so Google rankings are not the gate; access for ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User is.

Every current Claude model shares that pipeline, so model choice changes judgment and volume rather than plumbing. In my client testing, stronger Claude models cite fewer, better sources per answer and favour pages where the answer sits high on the page and the author is identifiable. The window for being one of the three to five cited sources is narrower than a search results page ever was.
