Gemini 4 Argon: What It Is and How It Affects AI Search Visibility

Gemini 4 Argon is the first model of Google's Gemini 4 generation, rolled out globally on October 13, 2026 after a limited release to vetted cyber defenders on September 30. It reads text, image, video, audio and PDF inputs across a 1,048,576 token context window, can produce up to 1 million output tokens with long decode, and is selectable in AI Mode and the Gemini app by Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, which puts it inside Google's own search answers for paying users.

What Gemini 4 Argon Is Used For

Argon is Google's answer to Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra: a frontier model rather than a Flash model, and the first of the Gemini 4 family. Google's availability post put it in the Gemini app for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on October 13, 2026, and Google's Robby Stein confirmed the same day that it was rolling out globally in AI Mode for the same tiers. On the API it is a stable model with introductory pricing of $2 input and $10 output per million tokens until November 30, doubling after that.

For search visibility the important fact is where it is not: the free AI Mode experience. Google's last explicit default statement still names Gemini 3.5 Flash, so Argon answers the paying minority who select it from the model menu. Those users skew professional, and Argon answers in AI Mode shipped with links from day one, after the Gemini 3.8 Flash launch in September briefly produced answers with no citations at all.

Retrieval and Citation Behaviour

In Google Search, Gemini 4 Argon answers are grounded in Google's index: the model retrieves from Google's ranking systems and links sources inside the answer. On the API, Grounding with Google Search is a supported tool per Google's model documentation. That means Google rankings remain the gate for Gemini visibility in a way they are not for Claude or ChatGPT, and the Google-Extended robots.txt control governs grounding in the Gemini app.

Which model answers still changes what gets cited. Frontier models cross-reference more sources inside the same context window and drop unquotable marketing copy faster, and Google has shown that citation behaviour can change with a model launch: the Gemini 3.8 Flash rollout briefly produced AI Mode answers with no links at all in September 2026. Build the assumption of model-driven variance into your reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gemini 4 Argon?
Gemini 4 Argon is the first model in Google's Gemini 4 generation, released to a limited group on September 30, 2026 and rolled out globally on October 13. It is a frontier model available in the Gemini app, in AI Mode in Google Search for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and through the Gemini API as a stable model.
Does Gemini 4 Argon power AI Mode for everyone?
No. Pro and Ultra subscribers can select it in AI Mode; free users still get the default model, which Google last explicitly named as Gemini 3.5 Flash at I/O 2026. Google has not said whether Argon will become the default.
Do Gemini 4 Argon answers in AI Mode include links?
Yes, per Search Engine Roundtable's testing on launch day. That contrasts with the Gemini 3.8 Flash launch on September 2, 2026, which briefly produced AI Mode answers with no source links until Google fixed it two days later. Google has not published citation-rate data for Argon.
What does Gemini 4 Argon cost on the API?
$2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens until November 30, 2026, then $4 and $20 from December 1, with cached input at $0.10 rising to $0.20, per Google's pricing page. It is not available on the free API tier.
